I'm devoting part of the off season to putting together a yearbook of sorts, which you can keep on your coffee table for everyone to admire. This book will contain box score information for every game along with post game analysis, individual photos and summaries (written by each of us), league leaders, season stats, Awards (mvp, off. player of the year, etc.), and team photo. this book will be beautiful.

Yo are the stats cut off or is my browser fooked?

Great job with the stats, guys. These past few games were hard-fought and I find myself missing the prospect of playing on this Monday night, comforted only by the idea that I'll be watching some pre-season Jets football instead.

One thing I think we should address before getting into our next round of games is fouls -- which a number of people, myself included, took issue with while games were in progress.

I don't think we should over-regulate what constitutes as a foul -- we know what our typical flow is -- but it might help to have something general said aloud so nobody feels like anyone else is being cheap in their calls in future games.

And so I'll mention a personal gripe: the counted-bucket after B-flo called "foul" immediately after shooting the ball, late in our most recent game.

I should be quick to point out that my bringing this up is not to say that that play was a game-changer. We were getting clobbered.

I'm all for playing however MAMBA wants to, but I don't believe this rule is conducive to playing a fun, active game. Calling a foul should stop play and gives your team the ball back automatically, or that's the only way I've ever played in parks growing up in Queens, NY.

If someone wants to let other competitors know that they've been fouled, prior to knowing if the shot is sunk or not, they might call "and 1," but it doesn't affect the play at all. If it falls anyway, you're the man.

What do y'all think about this matter and fouls in general?

For some perspective, I'm quoting from the street ball section of "hoopedia.nba.com:"

...rules vary widely from court to court. Almost invariably a "Call your own foul" rule is in effect, and a player who believes he has been fouled, simply needs to call out "Foul!", and play will be stopped, with the ball awarded to the fouled player's team. The etiquette of what rightly constitutes a foul, as well as the permissible amount of protestation against such a call, are the products of local social norms, as well as of the level of seriousness of a particular game. An outsider at a playground should closely observe the status quo in these matters.

Dr. Sess,

I think i fixed your stats problem. but in the future, you can change the screen resolution so the browser text becomes smaller. if you use Mozilla, just click CTRL and minus key.

On the fouls front, if we want to put together some guidelines as to what constitutes a MAMBA foul, that's fine with me, just to get it out of the way. In the past I think we went with "always respect the call", but be prepared to be called out as a pu$$y and teased relentlessly if you call pu$$y fouls.
On the shot - I think if you're fouled in the act of shooting and the shot goes in, it should count, the foul is waved off. That's the only way I've ever played in organized settings, but I'm open to trying other ways, as long as we don't start shooting free throws - our games move slow enough as it is...

i hear everything dutchman is saying about the fouls. I played that way in the park, too. but it just doesn't make any sense for a bucket not to count if you call foul while in the act of shooting. you're punishing the player who made the bucket rather than the fouler.

hopefully everyone will chill out on the fouls and the foul calling and we can just play the game.

hamsandwich said...

I disagree that the player is being punished.

His team would get the ball back and can try to get an uninterrupted shot off.

Isn't calling a foul when you shoot the equivalent of saying, "this isn't a fair shot, because I got hit."

To me, the rule as it is now would be like following that with, "...but look, it went in. Nevermind!"

Don't you think playing this way encourages people to call more fouls?

Dr. Sessions said...

Ahhh good point about letting the shot count will encourage more foul calling...I'm flipping, I'm on the side of the Dutch now...
